The sites, situated across the entire width of Botswana, but all south of Francistown, are spread out quite far apart and there are about 60 of them. This meant that I would travel a lot of kilometres to complete the work.
The first few days I stayed in Gabarone and visited all the sites around there.Used the bike sometimes, but used the bakkie for most of the work.
Some of these roads are Awesome!!
Some of them was not so nice!
The most beautiful part of Botswana remains the southern most part. From Middelpits I needed to go down to Bokspits. There was only one site more inland that I needed to visit, namely Khawa. I decided to leave the bakkie at the police station in Middelpits and take the bike on the round trip to Khawa and back, a trip of around 150km. This was one of my best decisions, as this road was one of the best experiences I've had.
From Middelpits the grass cover on the dunes gradually becomes less and less, until you only have incredible red dunes as far as the eyes can see. First you ride parallel to the dunes then the road slowly turns to cross the dunes, which makes for some amazing wheely action. :)
After the survey at Khawa, I just had to climb at least one dune, and it was a nice and big one!
I picked my line before going up the dune and bee-lined it up there. About 3/4 way up, the ground just disappeared beneath me. Luckily my speed was sufficient and I just sifted my weight back and made it up there. :)
From Middelpits I travelled all along the SA/Bots border on a newly constructed road. This is the most diverse place I have yet seen.
I camped in Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park and returned back to SA the next morning.
